Just a grain in the morning air, dark shadow on the hill
Sauren has a way about her that commands power and attention, but she doesn't make the best in the way of a leader. While she may like to be in command, she has very little patience and very little tolerance for those who threaten to drag her down. Selfishness has gotten her quite a long way in life and her attitude has warned people that she isn't to be messed with. Sometimes they burn if they get too close.
Sauren had never lived in one place for very long, even before she'd come out of her mother's womb. Her mother, Raavi Vaalha, was part of a wandering group of people, nomads that traversed the arid regions of Meride. Her brown skin and thin, wiry body tell the story of long days of work spent under the glaring sun. Her strange golden eyes are common among her people and were only a shade lighter than her mother's.
Her father had never intended to stay with the nomads for long and upon realizing that her mother had conceived her during a single night of passion, she wrote her father off as a nobody and got on with her life. Her mother cared about her enough that she never felt the missing presence of another parent figure in her life; the people she grew up with were family anyway.
While her people were content with migrating around Meride, deliberately straying from the more bustling towns and raucous city life, Sauren found herself wanting more. She would stare up at the stars during the night, watch their lights wink in the sky, and dream of a purpose in her life.
She discovered her powers at the age of thirteen years old when she'd gotten into an argument with one of the nomad boys. Carthen had commented on her "giantness" (she was 5'3" at the time and still growing). They ended up in a scuffle, but when Sauren grasped her fingers tight around Carthen's arm, she felt a warm sensation spread through her fingers. It was a rather pleasant feeling, but Carthen's screams told her otherwise.
When she released his hand, she found she'd seared off a few fine layers of skin; angry blisters had started to form around the room. Terrified, she fled to her mother
and explained what had happened.
The nomads were a peaceful people, and had become Sauren's family over the years, but this "demoncraft" as they called it, was a danger to their way of life. Tensions rose over the next few weeks as they insisted to Raavi that her daughter had been possessed by a demon of some sort and that they should rid of her--they were twisted by fear and Sauren began to fear for her life.
Raavi, during this time, had slowly fallen ill to old wounds from another time and couldn't accompany her daughter out into the world. Instead, she left Sauren with a crystal dagger, some coins she'd kept tucked away for years, and some old civilian clothes.
She lived as a street rat for some time, working as a thief in more of the dilapidated cities on the fringes of the forests in Occide. It wasn't until she was sixteen years old, lurking in the shadows behind a few potential targets, that she overheard them talking about a place called Ennui Academy. The years had stretched and she'd taken to exploring the full range of her powers; many spots of forest had been left blackened by accidental bursts of fire.
She set off for Ennui Academy as soon as possible and, after showing them the extent of her powers in a rage when they wouldn't allow her entry, well, she's been there ever since.
